<image:title>Anxiety & Depression - Depression</image:title>
<image:caption>CBT is evidence-based for treatment of depression and helps clients with transforming automatic thoughts, cognitive distortions, and addressing underlying beliefs and schemas. Cognitive behavior therapy is a structured, didactic, and goal-oriented form of therapy. The approach is hands-on and practical wherein the therapist and patient work in a collaborative manner with the goal of modifying patterns of thinking and behavior to bring about a beneficial change in the patient's mood and way of living his/her life. It is used to help a wide range of problems, and appropriate treatment protocols are applied depending on the diagnosis and problems the patient is facing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Anxiety & Depression - Anxiety</image:title>
<image:caption>Anxiety is the mind and body's reaction to stressful, dangerous, or unfamiliar situations. It's the sense of uneasiness, distress, or dread you feel before a significant event. A certain level of anxiety helps us stay alert and aware, but for those suffering from an anxiety disorder, it feels far from normal - it can be completely debilitating. CBT often focuses on replacing negative automatic thoughts that can occur in generalized anxiety disorder. CBT is typically conceptualized as a short-term, skills-focused treatment aimed at altering maladaptive emotional responses by changing the patient's thoughts, behaviors, or both.</image:caption>

<image:title>Anxiety & Depression - Panic Disorder</image:title>
<image:caption>The cycle of panic begins with the thought of catastrophe and misinterpretation of a series of events, physical sensations, or mental events. While disasters and misinterpreted stimuli are usually the normal consequences of conditions such as situational changes in blood pressure, stress, and fatigue, the person misinterprets these symptoms. These misinterpretations are quite convincing at the time. When misinterpretations occur, security and avoidance behaviors towards coping develop, and selective attention to internal events continues the cycle. In treating panic disorder, CBT may include desensitization to triggers that provoke anxiety.</image:caption>

<image:title>OCD - Treatment</image:title>
<image:caption>Several key aspects of treatment are thorough assessment, goal-setting, and treatment planning which determines the path forward and may include, hierarchy planning, in vivo exposure, response (ritual) prevention and cognitive processing or a more narrative form. Exposure and response prevention (ERP), involves gradually exposing you to a feared obsession, and having you learn ways to resist the urge to do compulsions and/or rituals. ERP helps retrain the brain to have decreased anxiety and discomfort in the face of a perceived threat which has no basis in the current situation. Additionally, research has indicated EMDR is efficacious for OCD treatment, specifically with use of the Distancing Technique. Before processing trauma, which may be (or may not be) behind some of the OCD obsessions and compulsions, the distressing encounters must first be addressed. Using the Distancing Technique prior to incorporating the Standard EMDR protocol is important. Depending on the client this can be a process which is slow and determined, or quickly incorporated. The client and client experience determines the path forward. I-CBT or Inference Based Cognitive Behavioral therapy is a relatively new and evidence-based treatment which targets the obsessional doubt (versus reasonable doubts) from which the obsessional sequence follows. By asking the “why” questions traditional OCD treatment such as ERP does not, I-CBT addresses the narrative that propagates the loop in which one becomes stuck. I-CBT involves progressing through 12 modules over the course of 12-15 sessions to help decrease obsessional doubt which is the basis for anxiety.</image:caption>
